“I sketch within the landscape, but the real work begins later in the studio, where memory, instinct and emotion take over. I never fully know where a painting will lead.” – Louise Davies
Louise Davies is an English painter and printmaker who lives and works in London. She studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins before completing an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Arts. Davies is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, based at Bankside Gallery beside Tate Modern. An award-winning artist, she has exhibited extensively across the United Kingdom, with works held in both private and public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum Print Collection.
Davies draws much of her inspiration from the landscape and her personal interpretation of it. Raised in the South West of England, spending much of her early life in Bath and later Cornwall, she developed a strong connection to the atmosphere, light and colour of the natural world. Moving to London at the age of eighteen, she immersed herself in the city’s galleries and museums whilst studying at Saint Martins. During this period she was deeply influenced by the colour and expressive freedom of Paul Gauguin, as well as the emotional power of the Rothko Room at Tate Britain.
Another important influence was her tutor, the printmaker Albert Herbert, whose spontaneous and intuitive approach to image-making left a lasting impression on her practice. His use of deep etching techniques and expressive mark-making continues to inform Davies’ own work today.
Renowned for her distinctive line drawings and richly layered colour palettes, Davies begins by sketching directly within the landscape before returning to her South East London studio to develop the work intuitively. Her paintings and prints evolve through memory, instinct and process, often without a fixed outcome in mind. The resulting works are atmospheric and dreamlike, evoking both real and imagined places.
Through her work, Davies seeks to create a sense of stillness and contemplation, offering a deeply personal and imaginative response to the world around us.
